Step by step
- 1Find the lot code. Japanese law lets a product that stays stable for three years carry no expiry date, so a lot code alone is normal on Japanese skincare. It should be printed into the pack, not stuck on, and match on the box and the bottle. A lot code shows when it was made, not that it is genuine.
- 2Read the back label. Japanese text, the maker's company name and its address in Japan are printed on it.
- 3The back label names Rohto Pharmaceutical. The Gokujyun lotion is clear, slightly thick and has no fragrance.
Signs of a fake
- The code on the box and the code on the bottle do not match.
- Blurry print, spelling mistakes or a font that looks different from the brand's other packs.
- Shrink wrap that looks re-applied, or a broken inner seal.
- A smell, colour or texture different from a bottle you know is genuine.
- A price far below every other shop. A real import has a floor price made of the brand's rate, duty, VAT and shipping.
